Accepting Responsibility

Accepting Responsibility is an undergraduate-focused pilot program launched in Spring 2024 that is designed to promote academic integrity through education. Cornell's value of maintaining academic integrity is upheld through honesty and respect of the intellectual efforts of individual students, peers, faculty, and instructional staff in all academic undertakings. This pilot is sponsored by the Bowers College of Computing and Information Science and the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education.

For small, first-time offenses, instructors may offer students an opportunity to accept responsibility for the academic integrity violation and attend a workshop on values exploration, healthy habit formation, and decision making. In return for accepting responsibility and participating in the workshop, the grade penalty the student receives will be limited and the violation will be recorded as a non-reportable warning to external entities (e.g. graduate and professional programs, employers, fellowship agencies, etc.). Additionally, the student and their instructor are both spared the burden of an academic integrity hearing process. In Spring 2024, a limited set of Bowers courses participated in the pilot and additional courses will participate in Fall 2024.
